How to Get More Mileage from your Electric Scooter Battery

Your electric scooter is powered by a pack of batteries that look similar to your regular double A’s but bigger, which tells us how far the technology has come. It’s not going to make a hoverboard really hover, but it’s a crucial component to the birth of the modern electric scooter. 

Electric scooters use lithium-ion batteries made by a handful of companies. High-end models use high-quality Li-on cells made by Panasonic, LG, Samsung, and Sanyo. Some electric scooters have hot-swappable batteries. It’s no different from changing the battery of your mobile phone back when non-removable batteries weren’t standard practice. 

Manufacturers measure the lifespan of your batteries by cycles. It’s the number of complete charge/discharge cycles it’s able to support before a percentage of the original capacity drops. For instance, if you have a battery with 300-500 cycles, your battery capacity will fall under 80%. You’ll have to slow down or use eco mode to conserve battery power.

How do I extend the lifespan of my battery? 

Keep it charged 

Make sure that your battery is always at least 10% charged. If you’re going to store it for a long time, make sure that it’s at least at 50%. Charge it at least once in 30 days. It’s understandable to make the most out of your battery capacity as much as possible, but waiting for your battery to be completely depleted before you charge it will shorten its lifespan. 

Invest in a high-quality battery 

The price-to-practicality ratio is important, but electric scooter batteries are worth investing in. Keep it safe  

Batteries can be affected by temperature. Make sure to store your electric scooter in a cool dry place. The IP rating makes it water-resistant, not waterproof. They may not look much but Li-on batteries are powerful, but a little sensitive. They can catch fire when overheated or damaged. Be careful not to overcharge overnight and dispose of your battery properly as needed. It’s definitely not like any other triple-A battery that you can throw in a drawer and forget. 

Electric scooters may not be as complicated as a car or motorcycle under the hood, but they still need a little maintenance. For the most part, these seem the most commonsensical, which is why these little things tend to get overlooked.
